Editorial: March On

This week BURMA DIGEST is exactly one year old. As we started one year before today to commemorate Aunty Suu’s 60th birthday, BURMA DIGEST is now one year old while we are preparing to celebrate her 61st birthday.

Within this one year BURMA DIGEST has grown up quickly_ now BURMA DIGEST websites are approaching a target of 100,000 total page-hits per month. But does a large number of page-hits mean that we have accomplished something towards our ultimate aim? No, we have not.

Because our ultimate aim is the overthrow of SPDC military regime.

Until that aim is achieved, we must keep in mind that we have not achieved anything. Because we have only one aim, only one wish, i.e. to overthrow corrupt military dictatorship, as long as we haven’t attained it, we achieve nothing yet.

Removal of despotic military rulers is the very first step towards rebuilding of our mother-land. Only afterwards, we will be able to democratize our country. And stabilize it and make it prosperous and let our people enjoy human rights.

As long as power-hungry generals, their greedy wives and their corrupt cronies are controlling the country, there will be absolutely no hope for any real democracy or true federalism or genuine human rights, let alone prosperity and prestige.

So if we sincerely love our mother-land, our first and foremost priority should be to remove and overthrow military dictatorship in our country.

So even if some desperate politicians become wishful thinkers for power-sharing with nasty homicidal military generals, BURMA DIGEST will go on fighting_ even if single-handedly_ until SPDC military regime is completely overthrown. Because any real democracy or true federalism or genuine human rights will never be achieved as long as despotic military generals are playing a part in civilian politics.

But our path to true democracy will not be easy and smooth. We will have to go through rough terrains and dangerous waters. We will have to fight up-hill battles. And it will be a very long running battle. Some of us will become too exhausted on the way and give up their fight and surrender to the enemy. And there will be casualties and losses. And we will have to make sacrifices also. But despite all these, WE MUST MARCH ON.

Even if the worst thing happens and they eliminate our leaders and the party, we will go on fighting from exile, from liberated areas on the border. Even if they wipe out all opposition above the ground, we will survive our revolution underground. What ever happens and in any circumstances, we must carry on the torch of democracy, never letting it extinguished.

We will march on until we reach our ultimate goal.

Dr. Tayza

Hello Dr. Tayza, Congratulations on a successful first year of BURMA DIGEST.  You are providing a truly valuable service to all who are concerned about the welfare and future of Burma.
Those who want freedom and democracy for Burma can never stop.  You are correct in encouraging persistence when you say, "WE MUST MARCH ON" no matter what.
Today we are all reeling over the news that our beloved Daw Suu Kyi has been hospitalized in Rangoon.  With her 61st birthday arriving on 19 June I think we must remember her words when she asked the free world to
"Please use your liberty to promote ours"  Perhaps her most important declaration was about about act and passiveness when she said, "...to act.  I remind people that karma is actually DOING.  It is not sitting back.  Some people think of karma a destiny or fate and that there's nothing they can do about it. It's simply what is going to happen because of their past deeds.  This is the way in which karma is often interpreted in Burma.
But karma is not that at all.  It's doing, it's action.  So you are creating your own karma all the time."
When the battle is important, there is no such thing as neutrality.  Doing nothing is a very definite choice.  A very wrong choice.  We all must do something and we must NEVER QUIT; NEVER STOP. We must march on until all the people of Burma are free to chose their own destiny.
Best regards for another good year for BURMA DIGEST.

Dear Dr. Tayza,
The last para about fighting --from exile, from liberated areas, and from underground -- reminds me so much about a famous speech by Winston Churchill during the darkest days of WW2 for Britain, when Hitler had taken over all of Europe and Britain stood alone, withstanding the merciless Bliztkreig bombardment.
Churchill said that the British would fight on the beaches (he expected Hitler to invade soon) in the streets and every step of the way, in a very do-or-die determined manner.
In those days, yes, it appeared that the Nazis were at the height of their power and their 1,000 year Reich seemed to be unstoppable.
And yet, because of Churchill and his countrymen were absolutely determined never to give up, no matter what it took, one day, they did achieve Victory. (with a little help from friends, like America)
That's how they won, and so shall we!
