Editorial: Convicting Junta Of Genocide
The military regime of Burma is truly guilty of genocide. The genocide in Burma has been silently going on for about half a century since late 1950s. The first military regime took over power from civilian government in Burma in 1958. Since from the very first day of military rule all successive military leaders in Burma have been running an ethnic cleansing campaign in all ethnic minority regions. But because of the total lack of media freedom, until recently Burma's ethnic cleansing activities has not been widely recognized by the outside world. But things are starting to change. Just last year President Bush met a young Shan ethnic woman who bravely compiled graphic records of killing, torturing, and raping by the regime's soldiers in ethnic minority areas. And also in last year, Guy Horton's report, Burma Rangers' reports and Christian Solidarity group's reports brought Burma's ethnic cleansing activities into media lime-light. Nowadays, every body knows that Burmese regime oppresses on ethnic minorities. They kill people, they rape women and girls, they use young men as porters/forced labourers, they burn down villages and they rob cattle and crops from farmers. Their sins are too numerous to count. So now, the question we have to ask the world's leaders is "whether these atrocities of the regime amounts to genocide". And how is genocide defined nowadays? Are acute killings only qualified to be regarded as genocide; what about chronic problems like that in Burma? How many people need to be killed in what length of time to be eligible for genocide? We are now asking our readers to
send any evidences and any personal experiences they have of oppression/torture/atrocity As we all know, the UN Security Council is currently considering informally to take tough actions on Burma's military regime from the point of view that Burma under military regime has become a threat to regional and international peace and stability. But we think UN Security Council should also consider punishing Burma's military regime on charges of genocide (and other human rights crimes) as well. If you have evidences of genocide committed by military regime please contact burmadigest@tayzathuria.org.uk Dr. Tayza ............................................................................ Comments Aung Htet Oo said _ It is always Malaysia , China and Russia defending Burma's genocide by saying we should stay away from Burmese Internal Affair. How can we make understand them that to stop genocide is International Community's Obligation, and it is not like interfering in Burmese internal affairs. Myint Oo said _ The military junta already passed line of respect & sympathy. We have to fight this diabolical creature & remove from our golden land. We have to bring peace by ourselves. UN & Europe are still waiting for Democracy in Burma. The military Junta become stronger day by day. So, we have to fight by ourselves as we can. Mr. Sein said _ You said: If you have evidences of genocide committed by military regime please contact. I think, there is no evidence greater than 8888 general strike and killing a lot of innocent people. (I just listened from RFA 02 Sept Morning 7 am program, Chapter 6, authored by Bartlin xxx (cannot remember). They killed a lots even on the road, hospital, there are a lots of CIA, CNN, BBC photos, tv news. They killed not only Rangoon, but also many cities, example Sagaing, killed 300, etc. Rangoon is the largest killing. I think, that evidence is large enough to show national genocide. SPDC may say they are not BSPP. But they didn't really couped. Just said the name coup. They let them (BSPP) stay freely without arrest
