Editorial: Internationally Displaced Brains

_ by Dr. Tayza

In today’s era of international migrations, it’s just natural that skilled professionals, expert scholars and academics move to greener pastures where their skills and knowledge will be better valued.

Countries which can provide better job opportunities and better chances for prosperity are attracting skilled professionals from all over the world. And, as sciences and arts can flourish only in free thinking societies, countries with democracy, freedom, human rights and equal rights under the rule of law are acting as magnets for freedom loving scholars and academics.

But on the other hand, countries with corrupt administrative systems and chaotic economic mismanagement by authoritarian regimes are showing huge losses of their intellectual human resources. Countries under the oppressive rule of thuggish militant regimes are like graveyards of intellect and education_ no free thinking, no flourishing of innovative ideas, and no progress in arts and sciences.

In a country like Burma where there is not only corruption and chaotic economic management, but also political oppression and ethnic cleansing, it is not surprising that Burma’s well-educated intellectuals, the professionals, the scholars and the academics are all living and working abroad. Some are skilled migrants. Some are refugees. Many of them in due course take up citizenship in their resident countries, and Burma loses her precious brains permanently.

Since from the dawn of history, people has been moving continually to greener pastures, and we cannot blame them as it’s part of human nature to seek better prospects for the future. Governments who can take advantage of this human nature will be profited from the mass migration of the Brains.

As long as Burma is under the worst military dictatorship in the world, there is very little_ virtually nil_ we can do to stop leakage of Brains from Burma.

We can just hope that Burma will regain her freedom and democracy in the near future. Only when Burma has become fully democratic, will we be able to make working and living conditions favourable enough to attract our drained brains back into our motherland.

I hope brain drain will turn to brain gain in near future.

The most problematic peoples in  Burmese Military regime's eyes are educated people. The regime wants them out from Burma. They don't care about the economy, health and education of the people. They are getting what they want.
